It started with something small—a quick trip to the supermarket—but somehow, it made me see my husband in a completely different way.
When he left the house that afternoon, I called after him and asked if he could pick up a pack of sanitary pads. I didn’t think much of it at the time. If anything, I expected the usual confusion that comes with that kind of request.
Maybe he’d text me from the aisle asking which brand.
Maybe he’d send a blurry photo of five different options.
Or call me, half-laughing, half-panicked, completely overwhelmed.
Instead, he came back quietly, set the groceries on the counter, and handed me the exact pack I always buy.
Not something similar.
Not “close enough.”
Exactly the same.

I looked at it, then at him, a little caught off guard.
“How did you know this was the right one?” I asked.
He just shrugged, like it wasn’t worth mentioning.
“I’ve seen you grab it before,” he said. “I remembered.”
There was nothing dramatic about the moment. No big gesture, no emotional speech, no reason to pause everything and make it meaningful.
And yet… it stayed with me.
Because in that simple answer, I realized something I hadn’t noticed before—he had been paying attention all along.
To the small things I do without thinking.
The routines I repeat without mentioning.
The tiny preferences that feel too ordinary for anyone else to notice.
Things I didn’t even realize were being seen.

“I think I should help more with stuff like this,” he said casually. “The small things.”
