“Sir… please take my sister. She’s hungry…”

This voice, almost drowned out by the noise of the city, surprised Nicolás Arroyo.

He walked quickly, almost running, lost in thought about the important meeting he had to attend that day.

Millions of euros, contracts, investor trust. Since Elena died—his wife, his world—work was the only thing keeping him going.

But that voice… He stopped and turned around.

Before him stood a boy of about seven. Thin, in tattered clothes, and with tearful eyes. In his arms he held a bundle: a little girl, wrapped in a faded blanket.

The baby whimpered softly, and her brother held him as if his life depended on it.

“Where is your mom?” Nicholas asked, crouching down to her level.

“She said she’d be back soon… but it’s been two days,” the boy whispered. “I’m still waiting here…”

The boy’s name was Adrian and the girl’s name was Lucia.

They had no one else. No letters, no addresses, just hunger and endless waiting.

Nicolas suggested calling the police, notifying social services, and buying them food.

But when he heard “police,” Adrian flinched.

“Please don’t give us away… They’ll take Lucia…”

At that moment Nicolas knew he couldn’t leave them.

Something inside him, hardened by sadness, broke.
