Suspicion.

Defensiveness.

Fear wearing anger as armor.

“She’s not fine,” I told him.

He came.

He stormed in.

He accused me of playing hero.

He looked at the groceries like they were evidence.

He didn’t yell after that.

He just stood there.

And something in him cracked.

“She didn’t tell me it was this bad,” he muttered.

“She didn’t want to bother you,” I said.

“You lose your job over this?”

“Yes.”

His expression shifted.
