“You’re going to embarrass the whole family!”
“Then let’s talk in front of the whole family.”
She hesitated, suddenly unsure.
“You don’t understand what’s happening,” he said weakly.
I crossed my arms.
“Then explain to me why my wife is working in the kitchen while everyone upstairs is celebrating.”
Allison took a deep breath and finally let loose with the argument she had been holding in.
Meredith doesn’t understand finance. She doesn’t know how to behave in the social circles you move in now. We were protecting your reputation.
Meredith’s shoulders slumped even further.
I reached out and took it carefully.
She shuddered slightly at the tenderness of his skin.

The party upstairs
The hallway leading to the upstairs floor looked different than I remembered.
The furniture was more expensive.
The decoration, more elaborate.
Everything had a touch of ostentation rather than comfort.
As we went upstairs, the sound of music and laughter grew louder.
When we entered the room, the conversation stopped almost instantly.
Several guests turned towards the staircase.
It was clear they didn’t expect him to return that night.
My mother, Diane Reed, was standing by the dining room table with a glass of wine in her hand.
Her smile appeared automatically.
“Evan! My son! What a surprise!”
But the smile quickly faded when I saw Meredith by my side.
The guests looked at each other with unease.
I walked to the center of the room.
“Who is organizing this celebration?” I asked calmly.
My mother lifted her chin.
“We are celebrating family.”
I nodded slowly.
“Then let’s act accordingly.”
I placed a reassuring hand on Meredith’s shoulder.
“Stay with me.”
She stayed by my side, trembling slightly.
Then I went to the living room.
