Today my daughter opened her favorite chocolate ice cream, the one she eats almost every day after school. Everything was as usual: the crunchy cone, the sweet aroma, the smooth layer of chocolate on top. But a few seconds later, I heard her say with surprise, “Mom, look what’s this!” I walked closer and saw something strange and dark inside, like a piece of wrapper or candy. At first, we thought it was just a defect, then that maybe a piece of chocolate had gotten in. But my daughter, always curious, decided to carefully dig in with a spoon. A moment later, she screamed. It all started like any other day of the week.

School bags rushed out the door. Shoes were hurriedly put on. The familiar sound of the freezer opening in the kitchen. My daughter’s favorite after-school ritual was as predictable as sunset: first homework, then her beloved chocolate ice cream.

She eats the same thing almost every day.

A crispy cone. Sweet cocoa aroma. A thick layer of chocolate that melts from the first bite.

Everything was as usual.

Until finally it stopped.

“Mom, look what this is?”

I was in the next room when I heard his voice.

I’m not scared. I’m not nervous. I’m just confused.
