I had just undergone a harrowing C-section. My body was still trembling from the anesthesia. Gabriel and Inès were sleeping peacefully beside me. Then the door burst open. My mother-in-law walked in without knocking. Impeccable fur, overpowering perfume, a hard stare. Catherine Morel glanced around the room with disdain. She threw a file onto my medical tablet. “Sign. A waiver of parental rights. Élodie cannot have any more children. She needs a son. You are not capable of raising two.” I stared at her, unable to believe what I was hearing.

She walked over to Gabriel’s crib. Pain shot through my scar as I tried to sit up. “Don’t touch my son.” She ignored me and placed her hands on the crib. In that moment, something inside me snapped. I slammed on the wall alarm button marked “Gray Code – Security.” Sirens wailed down the hall.
