He gave Lucia one last look, his anger mixed with disbelief.
“You haven’t won.”
She held his gaze.
“It was never a competition.”
In the following days, his tests continued to improve. Internal findings revealed undue influence and requests outside of protocol. Alejandro’s name appeared repeatedly in decisions that were not his to make.
The matter was referred to the authorities.
Lucía, still weak but growing stronger every day, managed to sit upright without help. Carmen was by her side.
“We have made progress,” Carmen said gently.
Lucia shook her head.
“This is just the beginning.”
It wasn’t just about his health. It was about regaining his voice, his independence, his finances, his dignity. Alejandro had relied on his silence and vulnerability. He believed that appearances alone would be enough to protect him.
I underestimated her.
One bright morning, sunlight streamed through the window as Lucia received official confirmation: Alejandro was being investigated for alleged medical interference with financial motives.
Carmen left the document on the nightstand.
“He’s worried,” she said quietly.
Lucia looked at the city moving outside.
