“It self-destructed,” I said.

Vanessa took a step back, as if she no longer recognized him. She reminded him that he had told her he was the CEO.

He said nothing, because he was nothing anymore.

I grabbed the bottle of champagne I had brought to celebrate. I headed towards the door and stopped.

—Jonathan—I said in a low voice.

He looked up, completely desolate.

—Congratulations—I added.

“Why?” he asked weakly.

I gave her a slight, knowing smile. “Today is, without a doubt, the beginning of a new life,” I told her.

Then I opened the door.

“But unfortunately, it’s not yours,” I concluded, and left.

I left the house that now legally belonged to me, leaving behind everything that no longer mattered.
