  1. Simple allowance: a little-known alternative

If you don’t meet the eligibility requirements for the Aspa (Supplementary Allowance for the Elderly), there is another option: the basic social assistance allowance. Less well-known, it is paid by the departmental council and also guarantees a minimum income, around €1,012 per month.

It is aimed particularly at people who have contributed little in France or who are not eligible for standard benefits. Again, the application is not automatic: you must submit a file to the social services department in your region.

It may seem administrative, sometimes discouraging, but tell yourself that it’s a bit like putting together a file for a mortgage loan: tedious at first, reassuring afterwards.
